The Bible tells us God is always with us, but how do you know He is with you if you can’t see Him? You cannot see God because God is a spirit. Some people call spirits “ghosts,” but that sounds scary, and God is not scary at all. He is like a daddy, only in Heaven; someday we will see Him when we get to Heaven. But for now He is invisible to you and me. So He is there, you just can’t see Him.
Think about when mommy is in the kitchen and you are in another room, you can’t see her or even hear her, but you know she is there. You can feel her nearby. God is with you the same way. You can’t see Him, but you feel Him near.
You can’t see God, but you can hear Him, not with your ears, but with your heart. When you are scared or lonely God talks to you and, like when mommy puts her arms around you in a hug, you feel better. Here is a little story to show you how you can hear God.
A little boy and his mother were shopping. He stopped to look at something, but mommy didn’t see him stop. When he turned around to find her, she was gone. He was very frightened, turning around and around and calling for her. At the same time, mommy realized her little boy was not with her. She got scared, too and started walking through the store looking for him. All of a sudden, she had thought, “I should go to the bench at the front of the store to see if he is there.” At the same time, the little boy thought, “I should go to the bench at the front of the store to see if mommy is there.” He was no longer scared, he just felt happy. They found each other at the front of the store, and goodness, were they happy! God told each one where to go to be found, and they did. That is how God talks to us.
God loves you so much, and He wants you to know Him better. The way you can know God better is to talk to Him in prayer and to read your Bible. God is there, even when you can’t see Him.
“Remember that I commanded you to be strong and brave. So don’t be afraid. The Lord your God will be with you everywhere you go.” Joshua 1:9 (International Children’s Bible)
