“Ooooh! Look at this one Hannah!”
Rachel pointed to a glittery gown for a doll that the sisters owned on the pages of the glossy catalog that had come in the mail.
Their mother stood behind them and looked down at the pages. “Girls, your Lucy doll came in the prettiest little gown. Why would she need another one? You remind me of the Israelites!”
The girls looked at their mother with surprise. “What do you mean, Mommy?”
“Well, the Israelites were God’s chosen people. God was their king, their leader. But they saw all their neighbors had human kings, so they begged for one. They didn’t need a king, but God listened to them, and the man he sent was a mess! I understand why you’d want another dress for Lucy. But she is great just as she is, don’t you think?”
The girls spoke more with their mom, and they understood that when we choose to be ungrateful for the good gifts God gives us, always wanting more, He can not be close to us. And having God close is so important!
