When we begin to understand what it means to follow Jesus, we hear the word sacrifice a lot. Jesus was the “sacrificial lamb.” Abraham led Isaac to be sacrificed before God intervened, and it was by animal “sacrifice” that sin was atoned for before Jesus came.
Sacrifice is an important word for Christians to understand because it is the sacrificial love of Jesus that we accept to cover for our sins. He lived a perfect life, and made no mistakes, so that when he died for us, there would be nothing but perfection to combat the darkness of humanity. Sacrifice is giving up what one wants or even needs, in order to provide for someone or something else.
“And walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:2
You, too, can sacrifice for others. When your parents ask you to share, you can give your toy to your sibling without any hesitation. You can also do things that might not be your favorite, like chores, when your parents are sick in order to help out. That is sacrificing your desire to play or relax in order to help others. That is a powerful way to show love!
How will you show sacrifice to others this week?
