“He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking on evil, he will dwell on the heights; his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks; his bread will be given him; his water will be sure.” Isaiah 33:15-16
“What’s wrong, Jack?”
“I am trying to figure out what a hero is, and if there are any real ones, not just make-believe ones.”
“You know, Jack, the Bible is full of people that were real life heroes. Let’s take a look.” Mom and Jack spent time reading stories of great battles and God’s chosen leaders. After, Jack’s mom said, what do you think makes a hero after reading these stories?”
Jack listed “hero traits” for his Mom: strong, kind, brave, hard working, and fair.
“And,” he said with gusto, “they always fight for justice.” His mom smiled.
“Let’s go for a ride, I have a surprise for you!” Jack’s mother took him to the local police station and requested a tour. After meeting an Officer Johnson, who promised to stop by if he was ever on patrol in Jack’s neighborhood, Jack was thrilled.
“Mom, God did give us true heroes! Officer Johnson is a true hero, just like the ones we read about in the Bible!”
There are heroes all around us, fighting to uphold God’s plan for justice. Who are some heroes from your life?
