Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. Matthew 6:19
The teacher sat down after the question was posed,
Everyone sat and thought, no one rose.
“Fire destroys your house, everyone is okay.
What one thing would you save if you may?
“All your family is safe outside,
You can save one object if you try.”
Thoughts turned inside their heads,
Remembering everyone is safe–no one is dead.
Squirrel pondered the question all that day,
Uncertain of what she would say.
She asked her mom later that night,
“What would you save if everyone’s alright?”
Her mom’s response was different than expected
“Nothing,” was her answer, after she reflected.
“Things are good to have and some are fun,
But things are all they are when all is said and done.
“Comfort and ease is what possessions can bring,
But it’s still only an earthly thing.
With you and the family safe from the fire,
There is nothing else I would desire.
“God gave us things to have and enjoy,
But he also gave us something better than a toy.
He gave a love and relationships to have and hold.
People are more important than things bought and sold.”
What is the “thing” you love most? Would you be willing to let it go?
