The 10 Commandments are a pattern to live by. The first four teach us how to show God we love him. The last six teach us how to love others.
The first commandment to teach us how to love other people says to honor our mom and dad. Learning to love others begins in our homes and with our families. You will always belong to your family, and some day you will create a family of your own. It is a lifelong commitment. Your family should be the measuring stick for all other relationships you make.
When your mom and dad teach you the ways of God, being good and righteous parents, you should honor what they say and obey their commands. Many Scriptures in the Bible promise a long life if you will obey your parents. The apostle Paul called this the first commandment with a promise. When you are small, your parents watch over you and keep you safe from anything that could hurt your body. As you grow up, your parents will teach you how to love God and obey the commandments. These teachings make God happy and He will continue to bless you for obeying Him, who is also your Father.
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honor thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise.) Ephesians 6:1-2
