Jonah was told by God to go to Nineveh and give a message to the people there. He was not very happy! Nineveh was a rough place, full of sinful, frightening people, and Jonah couldn’t bring himself to obey God. So he hopped on a ship sailing in the opposite direction to a town called Tarshish. This didn’t please God and Jonah knew it when a large storm came out of the otherwise calm sea and threatened to sink the ship. Jonah had to face the consequences of his poor choice in the belly of a fish after he had been thrown overboard. That’s one rough “time-out”!
Sometimes our parents or even God ask us to do something we know is right but sounds miserable. Instead of obeying, we go in the opposite direction, hoping it will all work out. But it rarely does. That is because we are called to live a life of obedience. It might be difficult at times, but don’t be like Jonah! Obey God and those He has placed in authority over you!
“Love the LORD your God and keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws and his commands always.” Deuteronomy 1:11
Is there anything you have been disobedient about in your life that you realized had grave consequences?
