“Mom, Josh brought his ‘lucky’ socks to school last week for show and tell. This week, half the class brought their ‘lucky’ things; a paperclip, an old horse shoe, even lucky underwear! I am not so sure that luck is real, you know?”
Jeremy’s mother looked gently at her son and spoke quietly, “Well, son, the Bible makes it pretty clear that we don’t need luck because we were given Jesus. Each time that someone might need a lucky pair of socks is a time that the person could pray and draw close to Jesus.”
Jeremy smiled. “Yeah, like for a big test. I think that if I studied and prayed that Jesus would help me keep my mind clear, I wouldn’t need any luck, right?”
His mother nodded in agreement. “The sad thing about trusting in a paperclip, or socks or underwear, is that they can not provide anything for us beyond their one specific purpose. Eventually, your friends’ ‘lucky’ things will let them down, but Jesus never lets us down. We can always trust Jesus to be there guiding us.”
“Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you.” 1 Chronicles 28:20
