We are teaching our dog to understand English. Our first step was to learn how to “speak dog.” Until we understood how our dog thinks, our words were misunderstood. Dogs understand orders–all else is babble. Dogs need a leader. They relate to–love–the one who gives what they need.
We people, though, use words to create our worlds. When we teach our dog a word, we help him live in our world as a companions. Each word must have only one meaning. Being clear and consistent when we teach words creates peace in our home.
Good words do that. It is important to say what we mean with others. Hurt feelings and lost friendships–even broken families–happen because one person misunderstands what another person says. When we listen to the way God wants us to talk, our words actually give life to other people. We listen to God by reading His Word and letting the sweetness of the Spirit make those words real in our mind!
Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. Ephesians 4:29
Do your words give life–or create pain? What can you say to speak life to someone else today?
