A joyful heart is good medicine, but depression drains one’s strength. Proverbs 17:22
Jai sat on the sofa watching Mom fold laundry. “Mom, I’m bored. I want to go to school,” he said. “I don’t feel sick anymore.”
“I know, honey, but the doctor said you need to stay home three days. It’s only been two days. You have one more day.”
Jai’s mom smiled and got an idea. She made a pile of socks on the kitchen table, and took out markers, and a cardboard box.
“I think we should make a puppet show.” Mom explained. “I have all of these unmatched shocks and thought we could use them for something fun.”
Jai and his mom created characters for their puppet show. They played together until it was time to pick up his brothers from school. When Jai’s brothers got in the car one of them was upset, “What’s wrong Caden,” Mom asked.
“I left my homework at home and Kris made fun of me because I had to do the make up assignment before going to recess. I am so mad at her.”
“Well Caden, I’m sorry Kris laughed at you. But tonight let’s put your homework in your folder before you go to bed,” Mom replied.
“Hmph,” Caden grunted, folded his arms on his chest, and turned his pouting face toward the window.
It was very quiet in the car for a few minutes and then Jai pulled a sock covered hand from his pocket, “Knock, knock,” he tapped Caden on the shoulder.
Caden turned and scowled at Jai, “Who’s there?”
“Orange.” Jai smiled.
“Orange, who?” Caden growled.
“Orange you glad school is out,” Jai giggled.
Eli, Jai’s oldest brother started laughing and so did Mom. Caden looked around at the others in the car laughing and started to laugh. By the time they got home, Caden was no longer upset.
Jesus teaches us in John 16:33 that we will have troubles and sorrow, but we can cheer up because He has taken care of everything. It’s not always easy to let go of anger and frustration, but we can do it if we concentrate on things that cheer us up. Jai saw that his brother needed cheering up and made him laugh.
Can you think of ways to cheer someone up if they are feeling sad?
