Secure and happy was he, living a life he loved,
But then came to Jonah an order from above.
“Go to the people of deadly and hateful ways,
Preach to them so I may receive their praise.”
Nineveh was the place he was called to go,
But Jonah answered with an ever strong, “NO”.
He turned and ran as fast as he could,
He thought he out run God, he knew he could.
Across the sea and over the fish,
Jonah ran, ran, ran, to Tarshish.
But his feet would never reach dry land,
He could not thwart God’s ultimate plan.
A storm was brewing high in the sky,
His shipmates all knew that they might die.
They pray to their idols for the storm to cease,
But no one answered for God was not pleased.
They shook Jonah awake from his bed down below,
“Why this storm?” Surely he’d know.
He answered with reluctance in his voice,
“My God has come for me for I have run from Him,
The only way to live is to throw me in.”
Over the side and down in the sea Jonah sank helplessly.
Never again would he try to flee.
Giving in and giving up Jonah sank
Deeper and deeper into the fish tank.
But God wasn’t done with Jonah just yet,
He appointed a fish to swallow him wet.
For three days and three nights in its belly did he live,
Thanking God for the second chance he would give.
To Nineveh Jonah knew he MUST go,
To share the grace of his God for all to know.
- Whales are mammals, which means they need to come up for air, unlike fish which can breathe underwater.
- The Blue Whale is the largest known mammal that has ever lived, with a length of up to 105ft long and weight of 150 tons. That’s the weight equivalent of 150 small cars!
