The tears in Kelly’s eyes began to overflow. She quickly swiped them and turned her face away.
“It’s okay to cry, sweetheart.”
“No! Paw-paw says big girls don’t cry.”
“Oh, honey, even Jesus cried. Tears are not bad, they show our heart is soft and that is good.”
“But I know God is good and Grandma is in heaven. I shouldn’t be sad.”
“To be sad is normal. Let’s see what Jesus did when his friends were sad because someone they loved had died. Look in your Bible at John 11:35.”
A smile crept onto Kelly’s face. “I know that verse. It’s the shortest one in the Bible. ‘Jesus wept!’ ”
“That’s right. The wisest man who ever lived says there is a time to weep and mourn. The apostle Paul says we should cry with those who are crying. We don’t cry without hope. We know God is good and when the weeping ends, we will rejoice!”
“It’s weird. I feel better just talking about it.”
“Pretending we are okay when we aren’t makes our pain worse. Bringing our hurts to light takes the sting away!”
Has someone ever told you not to cry? Remind them Jesus wept!
