Today was the daddy/daughter dance at Hannah’s school. Hannah watched all of her friends squeal with delight as their dads arrived. Hannah sat in a chair near the door and watched as the dance started. She began to think her dad was not coming, but she kept a smile on her face and said a quiet prayer for Dad to arrive soon. To Hannah’s surprise, Grandpa walked in wearing a suit and carrying a bundle of purple flowers.
“Grandpa! What are you doing here? Where is Dad?” Hannah asked as she gave her grandpa a hug.
“Hannah, your dad asked me to come in his place. He wasn’t feeling well. The doctor says he has the flu,” Grandpa explained.
“Oh,” Hannah sighed. “I really wanted to dance with Dad. We’ve been practicing for days and days.”
“I know, sweetie, but Dad is really sick. Will you dance with me instead?” Grandpa wiggled his eyebrows in a way that always made Hannah giggle.
“Oh, yes, Grandpa. I will dance with you. Thank you for coming.”
“It is my pleasure to be here, Hannah. I love you and I love seeing you happy.” Grandpa gave Hannah a hug and they joined the other dancers.
Hannah could have been very upset her dad didn’t come to the dance. Instead of crying and pouting, she smiled and prayed while she waited. She was surprised and thankful for her grandpa coming to substitute for her dad.
There are times we make plans, but things happen to change our plans. Having a good attitude about it pleases God. Philippians 4:6 says, ” … in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
How do you react with you are disappointed?
