The old rocker creaked while Miss Mae stared out on the gray street. She once longed for a few extra minutes to sit on the porch and listen to the bird songs. These days all she had was time; lonely days stretched into long nights.
“Miss Mae, Miss Mae!” Joy-Anne’s sing-song voice startled Miss Mae. Turning watery gray eyes toward the call, Mae couldn’t help but smile. Skipping up the walkway, eyes shining and pony tails swinging was her neighbor.
“We just made some cookies, Miss Mae. Would you like to try one I made?”
“I would really like that, Joy-Anne. Let’s get some milk to go with them,” Miss Mae replied.
