Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. James 5:16
Everyone makes mistakes. Sometimes we hurt other people’s feelings. Other times we may say foolish things or even tell lies. Remember, we are humans, and therefore sinful. What is important is not that we made a mistake in sin, but how we handle the consequences of our bad choices.
Asking for forgiveness is so important. If we do not recognize our badness and let it live in our lives, God can not draw close to us! It is harder for us to talk to Him, and for Him to breathe into our life. Asking for forgiveness is easy! All we need to do is pray that He will forgive us, and also that He will help us not to make the same mistakes again.
We must also ask for the people we have hurt to forgive us. Saying a simple sorry isn’t enough. We need to be sure to use our words to show God’s love, and a simple “sorry,” doesn’t always cut it. If you tell a lie, be sure to say something like, “Mom, I am so sorry that said that I fed the dog when I actually hadn’t done it. Can you forgive me?”
Being specific is important when we apologize because it lets us tell others that we are truly apologetic for a certain thing, and it helps us practice in asking God for forgiveness.
