“Mom, how come you cook so much?” Justin was watching his mother prepare a large batch of chicken pies.
His mother smiled and invited him to help her bag up the pies she had finished so they could be frozen, ready to pull out for a cold winter night’s dinner. “Part of why I cook so much is to help you grow big and strong.”
“But you had the Millers over for dinner last night, and took a pie to Ms. Jones two times last week. How come you feed them? The Millers aren’t even that nice. They fight a lot.”
His mother sighed, “Yes they do. Your father and I weren’t so different when we first got married. But we learned a lot about loving each other in the years since then. I feed the Millers hoping that maybe they will see your dad and I and our kind words will rub off on them. And Ms. Jones is a lonely widow who needs home cooked meals.”
“So you cook for people to help them understand God’s love?”
“Yes, it is one way I can help them see that our God is a God who serves others and cares about their needs.”
Justin hadn’t known that food could say so much about God’s love!
“And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.” Matthew 10:42
