But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
Are you tall and handsome?
Are your eyes dark blue?
You may be a browned-eyed girl,
Dark skin and hair-curly-Q!
You may run just like the wind,
Your smile might be so bright.
Or you may be a quiet one,
With steps so soft and light.
People see the outside of us.
God sees the inward part.
And all these things that people see
Do not reveal our heart.
Inside we may be tough and mean,
But outside all seems well.
Inside we may be kind and true,
But outside no one can tell.
The tallest of brothers seemed kingly,
But his heart was not fixed on God.
Samuel may have looked at him first,
But God did not give him the nod.
Outside David looked as shepherd boy,
But in his heart–our wise God could tell–
Faithful to the end of the battle.
He served God and Israel well!
Let’s look on the inside of others.
Don’t judge by the part that you see.
Only God can be the wisest judge
Of others … and you and me!
Fun Fact: No matter how good-looking you are, God can see inside your heart.
Questions: Which one of David’s brothers would you have picked as king—the tallest and the most handsome one? Can we tell how good someone is by looking at the outside of them?
