Even if we wash our whole body from head to toe being careful to get behind our ears, and between our toes, if our hearts aren’t clean, we aren’t clean either. Jesus, when He was here on earth criticized the religious leaders of His day called the Pharisees and Sadducees. They were the preachers and church leaders back then, but they did more to weigh the people down with rules that they didn’t even follow and made it hard for anyone to follow God.
Here is what Jesus said to them about their behavior:
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.” Matthew 23:27-28 (NIV)
And here is what that means:
They might look and act like they are good people, but inside they are not. They are like an apple that is red and juicy-looking on the outside, but, when you bite it, it has a worm. It looks good for eating, but it’s not. So don’t just look like a Christian by going to church, learn all you can about Jesus, and try to act like Him all week long, not just on Sunday.
