“I want this one too!” Julia was circling things in a catalog that she wanted. Her father looked at the page she was circling.
“Julia, I can’t help but notice you’ve circled everything on the page,” he said with a calm voice.
“Yes Daddy. Christmas is not long after my birthday, so whatever I don’t get for my birthday I can get for Christmas!”
Her father sat down and picked up his Bible. He opened it to a passage and read:
“And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Luke 12:15
“Coveting is wanting things that you do not have. The Bible warns us to be careful in wanting things, because if we are not, our life will become so wrapped up in our stuff that we will miss what is really important. Like a little girl turning five, or the miracle of Jesus at Christmas!”
Julia understood, but was a little sad. “I am sorry Daddy.”
“It’s okay. Tell me about the three thing you want the most, and we will see what happens when your birthday rolls around!”
Julia smiled and closed the magazine. “Maybe later Dad. Let’s go play.”
